Tasty Tuesday … in Christine’s Garden

There’s nothing like a road trip with good music in the car, and heading somewhere special!
Since leaving Sonoma County, California, many years ago, I’ve been going back once a year. It’s important for me to reconnect with the friends I love and miss! This also gives me a chance to visit places I didn’t explore while living there, to have some “alone time” to think and to step out of my daily grind!

One of my very favorite experiences on this trip was visiting Christine and Tom. Our families have been friends for at least 25 years. They live on a beautiful piece of land near town. I still remember when they first moved there. Over the years, they have slowly but surely transformed their land into a gardening and homesteading wonderland, all while working and raising a family!

Friday evening I was invited to stop by for a visit and a bite to eat. When I pulled into the driveway, I instantly noticed how much the garden has changed over the last year. Needless to say, I was ready for the deluxe garden tour!

Let me just say, the evening light was gorgeous! The flower garden even more so!

The garden also includes a huge vegetable patch, a small orchard of fruit trees, and some very tasty figs in the greenhouse.

Come along for a stroll through Christine’s flower garden, before we sit down to a most delicious homegrown feast.

Here’s the recipe:

  • Pick some of your homegrown fruits and vegetables, if you garden.
  • Or visit the farmers market and pick up some fresh veggies and fruit there.
  • Invite over some friends who’s company you enjoy.
  • Put together a few small and simple dishes and salads.
  • Add some rustic bread and cheese to the spread.
  • Set the table in the garden or on your balcony.
  • Talk, have a glass of wine, nibble on delicious food, enjoy the visitors.
  • That’s what I got to be part of that evening!
  • I will cherish this evening forever and I will pay it forward!
  • How about you?

There were beets from the garden, a wonderful tomato salad with pine nuts (I never thought of putting pine nuts into a tomato salad before! It’s divine!), the best peaches I had this summer, chopped and sautéed eggplant, some crusty local bread and goat cheese! I also enjoyed a glass of wine, the spectacular view of the gardens, and the company of two treasured friends!

I hope that you can make the time to do something nice and relaxing for yourself and the people you love while the weather is still reasonably good, and the farmers markets are overflowing with produce! Summer Solstice is just around the corner.

I can’t wait to go back next year, and see what else is growing in their garden!

    • Hi Kathrin! I always enjoy my California trips, but to have good friends there to see adds a whole other dimension! It’s probably the same for you when you visit your friends and family in Germany. I just feel lucky to have the time and resources to do these trips. 😀
