Happy Friday!

Happy Friday!, In my Garden, Musings, Nature, Photography

If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you probably noticed that I love flowers! As I look out my window, I see the forest behind us: tall native big-leaf maples are leafing out, the wild apple tree has a few white blossoms left and the Scotch broom is blooming bright yellow. I see squirrels sitting high up in the Douglas firs, chipmunks scrambling through underneath the fence and of course, let’s not forget the song birds showing off their musical skills.

Inside our yard, the camellias and forsythia are approaching the end of their flowering, while the irises and peony are getting ready to bloom shortly. This year will be a treat to watch them. For the past several years we had been traveling un May, and therefore missed this colorful display.

While it’s still raining quite a bit here, I’ve been enjoying my orchids inside the house. Somehow, I always thought of them as fussy, difficult plants to tend to. My sister Gabi however told me otherwise. Both she and my mom have gorgeous orchids on their window sills in Germany. This gave me the courage to finally try my luck with orchids as well. And lucky I’ve been! Regular watering, and the right location will keep those plants thriving and blooming again and again. Several of mine have repeatedly bloomed since I got them. And some orchids, I’ve discovered, are fragrant! I brought home a pink and yellow one from the store one day only to realize a few days later, that the flowers become incredibly fragrant mid-day. What a pleasant surprise!

  1. Happy Friday to you too. Your orchids look wonderful. I had a hard time keeping my kids orchids alive. You obviously have a very green thumb. Hope you have a great weekend. I’m starting to get my wits about me and ready to work outside later. Just got some coupons for ST. 🙂

    • Glad you’re on the mend Marlene! I was surprised to find out how little care the orchids require. I will be going outside today as well to do some yard work and start digging up some transplants for you.
      Happy weekend Marlene! 💐

  2. Hey Sabine! I bought orchids for the first time this year and they’ve been lovely, lovely. I was inspired after we spent a weekend at a friend’s cabin and she had several that were just as happy as could be! Have a great and happy weekend.

  3. Your window is beautiful. With your green thumb and experience, do you have any suggestion for indoor plants that can cope with a dark apartment? Cheers x

    • Thanks! I think that plants with dark green leaves need less light. You could even get orchids. Once the blossoms open, they don’t need that much light and the flowers can sometimes last for about three months. Also, check out “lucky bamboo”, it should be kept out of direct sunlight. I imagine there is a floral shop in your neighborhood where they have something perfect for your situation.
Plants (real ones) add so much to any living space! Good luck and let me know what you find! Have a great day! 🙋
