The flicker kept munching away …
… when suddenly a rare visitor to our garden peeked out from the beautyberry bush.
A Western Scrub Jay hopped out of the bushes …
… looked around …
… and then jumped over onto the suet feeder pole.
Jays are usually very loud and aggressive …
… but not this guy!
Isn’t he beautiful!?!
He waited …
… and waited …
… and patiently waited some more.
The flicker seemed unperturbed …
… and continued to feast on the suet.
This must be the world’s most polite scrub jay!
After a while he gave up, hopped onto the ground to pick up morsels that had fallen down.
And the flicker continued to much away …
🙂
And the Flicker still got to feast! I’m surprised that the two different Jays didn’t take over. What fun to witness. Thanks, Sabine. Have a great week!

This was one of the most assertive flickers I’ve ever encountered. Nice to see! Have a good week too, Missy!

Fantastic shots, Sabine! 🙂
Yes, they are quite different than our Blue Jays. We have Flickers and they are usually not very keen about humans being around.

Thank you, Tom! Our flickers are shy as well, but a few don’t seem to mind my presence as long as I don’t move suddenly. Despite not looking alike, I think all jays have very similar “birdanalities”! 🙂

You really have some parties out there with everyone invited and their best manners coming along. How fun. There are more types of Jays than I knew about. Great shots.

Thanks Marlene! It’s been really busy out back and I am beginning to wonder what kind of a winter it’s going to be. 😬 I guess we’ll find out! 😉

Wow, what perfect captures. Nice thing you were able to capture them before flying away.

Thank you, Arlene! It was lucky that they stayed for a bit!

You got some beautiful shots up close of the Jay … I like seeing the interaction between the two, the Flicker confident that he can monopolize the suet and keep the Jay at bay. The Jay was content to watch and wait and go for the crumbs. People should get along so well. 😉

Yes, people should! The funny part is that the jay and flicker had their roles reversed!

The Jay was submissive – he figured being on his best behavior might yield more treats, like an obedient child. Either that or he lives by the “do unto others … rule.” 🙂
