Oregon’s Nature Nooks … North Clackamas Park

Earlier this spring, on one of my many walks at North Clackamas Park I spotted a pair of brilliantly colored violet-green swallows. They were busy flying in and out of this small nesting box right by the community garden. There are four bird houses hanging from the wisteria arbor.

I wasn’t sure if they were getting ready to build their nest
or if their babies had already hatched.

There were no sounds coming from the nest.

I  had never seen swallows sitting still for long this close to me.
Excited, I made a promise to myself to come visit as often as possible
to keep an eye on the nest and possible nestlings.
These swallows sure tried my patience,
but it was worth the wait …

    • Thank you Trudy! I am well but have been feeling down in the dumps for a while with all the political turmoil. The pandemic is frightening as well but at least I feel like I have some control about taking protective measures and staying away from people. I hope you are doing well. 🙋‍♀️

  1. Those swallows are such a unique color Sabine. All our swallows are the same – that’s if you can get a look at them since they buzz by you at the speed of sound. I like the shingled roof on the nesting box. It looks like it would be cozy in there, so a swallow and its mate would be crazy not to grab that real estate and make it their home!

    • You’re right about the speed at which swallows fly. Watching this nesting box made me realize how lucky I was when I came by and spotted them. Saw them only once more after this. I’ll work on finishing the post of what happened next!

      • I look forward to seeing the post – maybe the nestlings looking out the opening? I was happy to see the baby swallows looking out of the nest at the covered bridge. Too bad it is a little dark in the bridge rafters though.

      • Hopefully you got everything done … right now, I feel the same way with chores outside the house, whether errands, grocery shopping or yardwork – you have to make hay while the sun shines. We will have another great weekend weatherwise … so get things done as who knows what happens next weekend, or after that?
