Love-in-a-mist, or Nigella damascena, are some of my very favorite flowers!
These particular ones are extra special because they were given to me many years ago.
I sprinkled the seeds throughout the flowerbeds around our deck. I waited, and waited, and waited some more … but for several years nothing happened. I was puzzled!
Then early one spring we went on a long trip. My garden got a bit neglected during five weeks we were gone.
First thing I did upon our return was checking on the garden. Surprise! There were lots of love-in-a-mist flowers blooming in the flowerbeds! Turns out that I had been pulling the tiny seedlings out right along with the weeds.
Don’t you just love how delicate and whimsical they look?
I like to watch the blossoms as they slowly unfurl, and then produce papery seed pods.
It’s magical, especially when ladybugs and western swallowtail butterflies visit.
But what I love the most about these flowers is, where they came from!
They came from my friend Rosalie’s garden.
She’s been a part of my life for almost three decades now!
Now I have lots of love-in-a-mist seeds that I share with gardening friends.

They’re delightful, and so is that butterfly! I have seeds to scatter around my garden as soon as the weather warms up a bit.

Mine have been so productive this summer. I’d bet next summer will be even better. Love in the Mist is one of my favorites now and I have learned how to save the seeds. 😉 Catching that butterfly on them is stunning!

What a lovely flower and lovely name. I am unfamiliar with this plant. Could it grow in the Midwest, MI in particular? To answer your question, I do share perennials with friends, mostly columbine and irises. Especially irises because they multiply so quickly.

Thanks LuAnne! This could absolutely grow in your area. Their seed pods are easily crushed and sprinkled wherever you want them to grow. A little sunshine, and decent drainage will help. They have come back every years even with snow and ice storms. I love irises and columbines. Those I share as well! Thanks for reading LuAnne! 😊
