Late Sunday afternoon I I noticed a rather large creature rustling through the bushes around my wildflower corner. I looked up and couldn’t believe my eyes! Right there in front of me I saw this beautiful California quail. He hang around looking for morsels in the dirt until a neighbor suddenly started up his leaf blower. That’s when Dan (the) Quail took off.
The next morning I was awoken by the loud call of Dan (the) Quail. I quickly made a cup of coffee, grabbed my camera and quietly found a place to sit and watch him scurry about. Suddenly he flew up onto the fence, looked around and then flew off into the trees. I haven’t seen him since.
Of all the birds I could have imagined seeing in my garden,
a California quail was something I didn’t expect to make an appearance!
Now, how do you spell it?
Was that potato or potatoe?

Good thing you were able to take lovely photos of it. I love birds. I love watching them when they visit the garden.

I only see sparrows in the garden. Oh, but they love to sing early in the morning.

We have some sparrows too, Arlene. They also sing beautifully and early in the morning. Sometimes they are so noisy, they wake me up!

I bet you wanted to shoot that neighbor with the leaf blower the first time Sabine – I know I would have wanted to! I’ve never seen a quail and you sure had a bird’s eye view of Dan didn’t you? I hope he comes back and your camera is handy. P.S. – I hadn’t thought of the potato/potatoe dialogue in years until I read this post. 🙂

When I lived in California I’d see them frequently. You could see entire families crossing the street with one parent on each end. 😊

OK, then we’ll let him live then. 🙂 Sometimes I’ll be at the Park and watching the goslings or I’ll see a cardinal up in a tree, angling in to swipe a peanut and I am standing there trying to take some up-close shots when someone will come along with a dog and the dog scares them and and they all scatter. There are no dogs allowed in the Park – there is actually a fine.
In one of our parks, not near me, there is a five-foot rattle snake living there. Rattlers are rare here, so they figure someone had it as a pet and no longer wanted it and let it loose in the park. They cannot catch it and have consulted with snake experts. It just slithers away so they now have the park cordoned off. Unfortunately, this is their city’s “Fishfly Festival” and this is a nearby park to the event.
I can just picture those quails crossing the street, much like the photos of the geese, ducks or swans swimming in a line with parents at either end.

They are such cute birds and I’m surprised they are here as well. Maybe they are enjoying our cooler weather. It’s been wonderful. How are you doing this week?

I loved seeing a quail here! The weather has been great, I’ve spent most of my time in the garden this past week. I’m doing well. Hopefully you are too! I’ll send you an email tomorrow! 🙋

Lovely photo. We are seeing quite a few now. A large male flew up to the gazebo while we were sitting there. I think he was surprised to see us, because he backed off a little ways and then sat with his back to us for about 3 mins. Then few to a nearby tree. What was his intent? Watching for predators? I wonder.

Thanks Christine! Perhaps he just enjoyed looking at your garden! I can imagine that the gazebo roof would make a great look-out to keep an eye out for predators.

Funny, but the first thing that came into my mind when I saw this quail was the other Quail. The one of potato fame! They are gorgeous birds and this one was quite plump compared to the ones I saw in California.
