ambrosial nectar station
now
open for business.
Summer here is off to a great start. Just as I was lamenting a couple of weeks ago that there weren’t any hummingbirds around yet, they suddenly appeared seemingly out of nowhere. Now three different hummers have taken up residence in our garden. They are however, extremely territorial and put on quite an arial show when “battling” each other, or at other times dive-bombing me near their favorite flowers. Despite being very small, these hummingbirds vigorously attack much larger birds and chase them off.
The hummingbirds will even harass bees and bumblebees visiting my Lavender Grosso!
Sitting quietly, pausing, inhaling
as the lavender’s intoxicating scent wafts through the air
displacing for just a few moments
all the woes of this world.
Have a peaceful day!
Sabine
This is beautiful, Sabine! I am so jealous of your having hummingbirds, but thank you for sharing! What a fascinating little bird! Your photos are stunning, and capture the quick darting. And I love your poetry to accompany the images.

Thanks Ali! Hummingbirds are one of my favorite birds. Without them visiting the garden it wouldn’t be nearly as fun a summer.

These photos are fun to see – to watch, really. There is so much “motion” conveyed by the blurring. I can feel and smell the air movement in the small space between lavender and bird, and bee. Bravo to the birds and bees.

I’m glad you like these photos Trish! Hummingbirds are always fun to watch, but these guys are a riot! Sometimes they chase each other right past our heads. No collision or stab wounds yet! 😉

Those are some great shots of humming birds and bees! The lavender too. Such a peaceful scene. This is going to be one hot summer. My butterfly bush is full of bees and some butterflies but I can’t photograph them well through the window but that’s where I watch them.. I am hiding from the heat. 😉 Stay cool.

Your butterfly bush is in the perfect spot! The heat always seems to make flowers more fragrant. We actually turned on the a/c today to keep from melting. I’ll send you an email later today. Stay cool too Marlene! 😎

How beautiful your post is Sabine! Just a little envious of your humming birds, so lovely in their iridescent feathers. The poetry is perfect too.

Thank you Jane! They are like tiny flying jewels zooming all over the place. I would love to see some posts on birds, especially the honeyeaters, from your neck of the woods! I always enjoy your posts on your garden! 😊

Oh, thanks, Sabine. I’ll have to see if I can catch some on camera. They’re rather quick, like your humming birds.
