During all the years we lived in Sonoma County, California, I rarely missed stopping off at Bodega Head, anytime we went to nearby Doran Beach.
I still love this spot and still stop here every time I come back to Sonoma County.
Bodega Head is located about 20 miles west of Santa Rosa and 40 miles northwest of San Francisco. This rocky outcrop has spectacular views even from the parking lot. You don’t even have to get out of the car if you don’t want to!
ZD McGee spotted a lone seal napping on a small rock down below in the water. Needless to say, there were also the ever present gulls circling above, waiting for an opportunity to snatch someone’s lunch.
A small path leads down to the beach for anyone willing to make this steep climb.
Despite the sunshine it was rather cold and blustery once we got out of the car.
This place is always crowded on weekends, and during the whale migration season.
Watching and listening to the surf always helps me relax and clear my mind.

Gorgeous views there. Watching whales must be fun. My favorite spot to escape to? Barnes and Noble. 🙂

Barnes and Noble is another favorite spot of mine too! Whale watching is fun, but you don’t always see any. The coolest whale encounter I once had was at the mouth of the Klamath River. We were on an ocean spit with a group of friends one early evening when suddenly a orca appeared right in front of us! I have never forgotten that moment! Dad’s Camp (on the spit) is no longer. It was watched away years later in a fierce winter storm!

So great to see our own Bodega Head on your international blog! Sarah and I went out on a full moon night a few months ago! Beautiful, and the weather was perfect. Just about any lonely place in nature helps me unwind. The Ocean is at the top of my list. Mendocino headlands is another a special place.
