Hummers are resourceful when procuring their nectar.
They are very agile and can fly in any direction, including upside!
They weigh about 3 grams or approximately the weight of a penny.
Look at her standing on the Rose of Sharon blossom!
It’s just so much fun to watch hummingbirds visit their favorite blossoms.
Now that the weather is getting warmer I look forward to watching their arial, agile antics!
🙂
I’ve never seen a hummingbird on a flower … I’ve gone to the Botanical Gardens on the warmest, most-humid days and miss them. Maybe they slept in that day, but the Gardens’ official photographer says “look over there!” I will run over and see nothing. Perhaps they have dipped into a flower and that’s why? I only saw Hope at the feeders at my house a couple of times although my neighbor said she was a frequent visitor.

Next time you are at that garden just stay near the plant for about ten minutes. Most likely the hummers will show up and if you don’t make any sudden moves, you’ll be able to see them. Patience is important!

OK, I will try that then Sabine. Because that one morning it was quite frustrating as he kept saying I’d just missed it. It is a fairly large area.

Looks like this hummer has mastered the trick of piercing the base of a flower to get nectar w/o carrying pollen. Maybe she was just after a little bug.

I’ve seen a number of them piercing the base of various flowers and also on flowers buds not yet open. It also wouldn’t surprise me if bugs were being a targeted as they eat those too.
